Mary Mwangi is the founder and managing director of Double M public service vehicles under Express Connections Limited. Born in 1961, the entrepreneur resigned from her job as a clerk at the National Hospital Insurance Fund, opting to go into business. She started the business together with her late husband, Mwangi Mugo, in 1980 with only one bus.
The company has since grown by leaps and bounds and now operates a fleet of over 100 buses, employing more than 250 people. Her husband passed away in December 2011 while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital. Mwangi is a mother of three boys and three girls. She says the name Double M came from both her own and her husband’s initials, which are MM.
She unsuccessfully vied for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat in the 2013 and 2017 General Elections.
