Peris Pesi Tobiko made history when she became the first Maasai woman to be elected to a leadership position in 2013. She became the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kajiado East.
Tobiko has served as district officer and also as benefits manager at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), the agency that oversees pensions. She was also the chairperson of the Tanathi Water Services Board where she initiated development projects in Kajiado such as drilling of boreholes to provide the people with clean water. These projects increased her popularity and gave her a clean edge over her opponents during the elections.
She had previously vied for the same parliamentary seat in the 2007 general elections, but lost. The few votes she garnered kept her motivated that she could win the seat, a dream that she was able to actualise.
