Lady Justice Grace Mumbi Ngugi is a renowned lawyer and judge. She is also the co-founder of Albinism Foundation of East Africa started in 2008 to ensure the social acceptance of people living with albinism. The organisation also protects and advocates for their rights and demystifies albinism myths.
She has defied all odds pitted against her. Having been born with albinism, she was always the centre of attention in every crowd she was brave enough to appear in. The attention wasn’t always positive as some would speak of her in disparaging terms.
Ngugi started off as an Advocate of the High Court in 1988. She rose through the ranks to become a Judge of the High Court in 2011.
A law graduate of the University of Nairobi, Ngugi has also been involved with civil society as a part-time researcher for Civil Society and Governance in East Africa for the Series on Alternative Research in East Africa Trust (SAREAT). She also consulted with the Ministry of Transport and Kenya Railways Corporation in the Resettlement Action Plan in 2010. She was named ambassador for Brand Kenya in 2013. She presented evidence to the Philip Waki Commission as legal counsel on behalf of FIDA on gender-based violence victims of the post-election violence (PEV) of 2007/2008. Despite this busy schedule, she found time to pursue a master’s degree in law from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Ngugi’s rise in the judiciary has been meteoric, but assured. She has made landmark rulings in her short career as a judge and was awarded jurist of the year by ICJ in 2013.
In April 2016, Ngugi was transferred from the Constitutional and Human Rights Division to the High Court in Kericho, and currently serves as the presiding judge in Kericho
