Njeri Kabeberi is a vocal social activist and lawyer by profession with a career spanning over 20 years. She is a champion for inclusive politics in Kenya and beyond, focusing on democracy and human rights. Kabeberi was at the forefront of the fight for human rights and multiparty democracy in the 1990’s. In 1991, she founded and chaired a pressure group called Release Political Prisoners whose clamour for human rights led to the formation of Freedom Corner at Uhuru Park in Nairobi.

She served as a board member of the Kenya Human Rights Commission from 1993 to 2006 and as a member of the Citizen’s Coalition for Constitutional Change. Between 1997 and 2004, she was Amnesty International’s Development Coordinator for East and Southern Africa.

Kabeberi founded the Centre for Multiparty Democracy-Kenya (CMD-K), an organisation looking to build the capacity and help set up structures of political parties as a way of underpinning democracy and human rights in Kenya. She served as its executive director between 2004 and 2009 and was also the country’s coordinator for the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy.

The defender of democracy and human rights advocated for a federal government and inclusive political parties. Her long fight for human rights has not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous accolades. She has received the Democracy Ribbon from Netherlands for her fight for human rights and democracy in Kenya and the 2009 Humanity Award from the Frankfurt Chamber of Lawyers in Germany. Her most significant award, however, was accorded by the Mau Mau warriors after she successfully petitioned for recognition of their role in the fight for independence.

In January 2008, during the post-election violence, Kabeberi’s name was published on a list of human rights defenders who should be targeted because it was stated that in calling for an end to the violence, they had betrayed their ethnic origins.

Kabeberi was in September 2016 named executive director for Greenpeace Africa, an international environmental watchdog and lobby group established in 1971 that has been exposing crimes against the environment wherever they might occur and irrespective of who they are committed by.
