Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Economy

Micro enterprises are firms with annual turnovers of up to Sh50,000 and have not more than nine. The law caps the total assets and financial investments, or the registered capital, of a micro enterprise at Sh10 million in the manufacturing sector and Sh5 million in the service and agricultural sectors. Small enterprises are firms with an annual turnover of between Sh500,000 and Sh5 million and have up to 49 employees. Medium enterprises are firms whose annual turnover is between Sh5 million and Sh100 million and employ between 51 and 250 employees. The Kenya Vision 2030, Kenya’s social and economic development blueprint, envisions the establishment and operationalization of forty-seven (47) Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) centers in all counties. It also envisions the establishment of a MSME National Documentation Centre to capture or profile MSMEs for easier evaluation, monitoring and counselling for establishment of case studies.

As the government implements the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto through the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) of the Fourth Medium-Term Plan (MTP IV) one of the 2023 Micro SMall and MediuM enterpriSe (MSMe) econoMy early programmes is the move towards greater financial inclusion for individuals as well as small businesses. This is among key strategies for spurring growth across the country due to the large numbers of people bound to be affected by positive movements in this area.
