Dorothy Ooko is the PR Lead for Africa at Google. Prior to joining Google in 2011, Ooko served as the Communications Manager for Nokia overseeing East and Southern Africa. In 2008, while with Nokia, she spearheaded the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on mobile phones in Kenya.
The technology professional attended Fort Hall Road Primary School and then Pangani Girls High School and later Alliance Girls High School. She enrolled at the Université de Haute Bretagne in France to advance her passion for French after which she came back to Kenya and studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Education at Kenyatta University.
After graduating, she taught briefly at Mukumu Girls High School and then moved to teach at Kenyatta University after completing two masters’ degrees – one in French and another in business administration.
Ooko also worked at United States International University-Africa for 16 years as well as with LG, Safaricom and other mobile handset distributors in Kenya and East Africa. Her passion for languages saw her master French and Spanish. She also has a basic understanding of Portuguese. Ooko is a board member of AkiraChix – an association that inspires and develops women in technology through networking, training and mentoring.
She also trains professionals to be mindful of the way they live their lives and to grow in emotional intelligence, enhanced performance and leadership.
